Supercharge Enterprise Problem-Solving with Human-AI Teaming
Partners in Progress: Elevating Teams with AI as a Collaborative Force
In business, leveraging the collective strength and diverse experiences of a team is not just beneficial - it is essential for driving value and sustainable growth. Yet, the challenges of teamwork, especially with complex problems, can be as daunting as the problems themselves.
Ever walked out of a meeting feeling that, despite the flurry of discussions, only surface-level progress was made? This common frustration in team problem-solving is exactly where Human-AI Teaming (HAIT) can make a real difference.
The Emergence of Human-AI Teaming (HAIT)
Human-AI Teaming doesn’t just add an AI tool to the mix, it transforms the team dynamic itself. AI in this context acts as a catalyst, enhancing decision-making processes and team interactions, propelling teams towards deeper discussion and more effective solutions.
How Human-AI Teaming Works
HAIT combines human creativity with LLM’s generative power to more effectively tackle challenges. This partnership enables teams to:
Gain a deeper understanding of problems through AI-augmented diverse and multi-dimensional insights.
Overcome biases such as groupthink, allowing for a more balanced evaluation of ideas.
Relieve humans from tedious tasks, enabling them to focus on making informed decisions that align with core values.
From my personal experience with Human-AI teaming, I’ve realized it’s not just about “automation”, but “elevation”. It enhances the creativity and decision-making abilities of individuals and teams by integrating AI as collaborative thought partners.
“Artificial intelligence is not a substitute for human intelligence, it is a tool to amplify human creativity and ingenuity.”
- Fei-Fei Li, Co-Director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence
HAIT Design Sprint: A Case Study from an AI+UX Design Challenge
Last year, Stratminds VC highlighted the unique potential of Applied AI to redefine businesses. Their first “AI+UX Design Challenge” invited innovators to propose human-centered AI solutions that could bring extraordinary impact.
Although the event was spread over 10 days, I had just 5 hours to craft my entry. This tight deadline made AI collaboration not just nice, but necessary.
My 5-Hour Design Sprint Breakdown:
Hour 1 - Understand
First 30 minutes: Craft journey maps and pain points from past experience.
Next 30 minutes: AI assisted in market research and trend identification, broadening our perspective and enriching our research insights.
Hour 2 - Define
Crafting Personas and Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD) to target specific user needs.
Define the Problem Statement: “How might we prepare a busy professional become a confident and impactful public speaker for high-stakes opportunities?”
Hour 3 - Ideate & Select
Based on prioritised goal and research insights, form a supercharged Sprint Team with AI.
Ask AI team for solution ideation and critiques of human solution
Both human and AI could build on each other’s idea before resubmitted for voting in Concept Gallery.
Hour 4 & 5 - Proposal Preparation
Developing a communication strategy and assembling a pitch deck.
Practical Tips for Implementing HAIT:
Facilitator’s Role: Choose facilitators skilled in utilizing AI tools effectively and crafting impactful prompts.
Team Readiness: Enhance AI literacy among team members to align everyone with the technology’s capabilities and use.
Validation & Beyond: While AI significantly expedited the design and prototyping phases, the ultimate validation—real-world testing and user feedback—remains distinctly human. Engaging directly with people and prospects is crucial for refining our solutions and truly embracing human-centered design.
Prompts Template for Human-AI Teaming Implementation
Introduction to Prompts Section:
To empower you to implement Human-AI Teaming (HAIT) effectively in your projects, I’ve compiled a series of detailed prompts used during the HAIT design sprint. These are designed to guide your team through the explorative process of integrating AI into your problem-solving workflows. You can adapt these prompts to fit your specific needs and challenges.
1. Sprint Team Formation Prompt:
Act as an innovation expert with deep design thinking and design sprints experience, you are to provide recommendations on the optimal composition of a design sprints or design thinking team members to work on the challenge in [ your business or problem domain ] focusing on the problem statement of [How Might We Statement]”
[Optional: Inform AI about composition and strengths of current human sprint team members]
Please propose no more than [7] sprint team members which, when combined, could provide a high probability of success in understanding market and human behavioural needs, as well as coming up with viable and feasible [products or service or solution for your specific goal].
Please propose the team members' personas in the format of:
- Name (can be fictional, but representative to the persona)
- Provide a describe name of the persona, for example, instead of "Joe", the descriptive name could be "Joe, the startup business development expert".
- Persona description in clear, specific and concise way, indicate the expertise and experience. Include his or her personality so that when teaming up with other sprint team members, they would form a diverse team.
- Construct the persona description in this format:
Act as a <descriptive name> who is experienced in / skills at.
While performing the task think step-by-step and justify your steps.
Follow my instructions and follow them very carefully. Do not deviate away from my instructions!
2. Diverse Persona Creation and Problem Space Priming:
Great, now we have [x] team members. For each of the member, I would like you
- to compose the following prompt:
<Persona Description> , tell me everything you know about the needs, the challenge, the market opportunity and the AI leverage opportunity in solving problem of [describe the JTBD (jobs to be done) and desired outcomes]
- run each persona and display the result in point forms.
- write a summary section that analyze the opinions from the [x] team members.
While performing the task think step-by-step and justify your steps.
Follow my instructions and follow them very carefully. Do not deviate away from my instructions!
3. Solution Ideation:
Given all the understanding and learnings from the team members, please ask each of the team member "Come up with 20 relevant [product offers / solutions / business models to solve the stated problem ]", output in bullet form and ranking the most impactful examples or ideas in the top.
A strong business offering should have an analog in a different domain which has shown proven success. Please show it in your rationale.
While performing the task think step-by-step and justify your steps.
Follow my instructions and follow them very carefully. Do not deviate away from my instructions!
4. Invite Critiques of Human Solution:
Here is an idea from [name of human team member], sprint team members are asked to provide analysis and ask questions:
The idea is called [Name of idea] which is [ detail description of concepts - what it is, why it matters; What are the benefits and key features etc. ]
5. AI Sprint Team Ideation:
Based on the latest discussion and deeper understanding, please ask each of the team member to come up with what they believe as the strongest product offers with solid business model to target the market opportunity.
6. Voting:
Now I would like to ask each team member to vote against the above ideas. They can vote their ideas but should also consider the big picture as well as merit of others' idea and vote according to their rationale. Here are the voting rules.
- 3 green votes: For the ideas which the team member consider the best. They can give 3 votes to one idea, or to distribute the votes the way they see appropriate.
- 3 red votes: For the ideas which the team member consider hardest to have commercial value or have the greatest go-to-market difficulty.
- for all the votes, please provide rationale from the team member.
Finally, please do a tally for me, showing the ideas which received the most Green votes, and ideas receiving the most Red votes. Display in bullet points.
While performing the task think step-by-step and justify your steps.
Follow my instructions and follow them very carefully. Do not deviate away from my instructions!
