The rapid growth in AI development, particularly in the era of Large Language Models (LLM), unlocks remarkable potential. However, within this progress, a critical question arises: "Is AI truly accessible to everyone?" This discussion is inspired by a personal experience that highlights the challenges and opportunities for accessibility in the AI landscape.
Experience with Custom GPT and Accessibility Challenges
I recently reconnected with a friend, sharing how AI could transform our devotional studies through the Custom GPT "Bible Insight 中文和合本" (i.e. Bible Insight with Chinese Union Version) I developed on OpenAI. This AI, tailored to our preferences, able to display in Traditional Chinese Script and use Chinese Union Version for bible reference, seemed a perfect tool for deeper understanding. However, the excitement was short-lived. My friend, residing in Hong Kong, faced immediate barriers due to OpenAI's restrictions in the region, highlighting a significant access issue.
HuggingFace Assistant: A Step Towards Solutions
In search of alternatives, I explored HuggingFace's recent launch of HuggingChat Assistants, an open-source platform promising free access and no regional blocks. This seemed like the perfect solution. Yet, direct porting from Open AI’s Custom GPT to HuggingFace’s Assistant revealed some challenges, particularly in maintaining accuracy with Traditional Chinese script, underscoring the nuanced difficulties in AI accessibility across languages.
Evolving "Bible Insight" for Multi-lingual Accessibility
In my journey to make the HuggingChat’s Bible insight Assistant more inclusive, I crafted "Bible Insight for Everyone" using diverse prompt engineering tactics on the MistralAI’s Mixtral8x7B-Instruct-v0.1 Open Source LLM.
Granted, capable LLM models like Qwen 1.5 72B Chat exist, supporting the Chinese language, alongside multilingual projects like Cohere’s Aya. This realization underscored to me that LLMs are more than just the latest in Transformer-based neural networks; they are strategic custodians of human history and culture.
Even though this Mixtral8x7B-based Assistant (see conversation logs here) might not always be as consistent or stable as its custom GPT counterparts, it vividly demonstrates the incredible potential of open-source models.
LLM for Cultural Preservation
The journey underscored the dual role of LLMs in technological innovation and cultural preservation. Initiatives like Singapore Government's National Multimodal LLM Programme, which aims to develop localized LLM, illustrate the potential for AI to support diverse linguistic and cultural identities. This realization brings to light the various forms of accessibility challenges, from geographical restrictions to economic and linguistic barriers, urging a reevaluation of how AI can serve as a bridge rather than a divide.
Reflection for a More Inclusive AI Future
As organization leaders, we can ask ourselves:
Are we enabling our diverse teams to utilize AI, regardless of their role, language, or location?
This reflection is crucial for creating an environment where AI empowers everyone equally.
For AI product builders, the question becomes:
Are we actively removing language barriers to enhance accessibility and user experience?
Addressing this challenge not only expands the market but also makes AI tools more accessible and valuable for a broader audience.
Building a More Accessible AI Future - A Collective Mission
Achieving a more accessible AI future is a collaborative journey, requiring the collective effort of individuals from diverse backgrounds. By working together, we can turn the vision of inclusive AI into a reality, ensuring technology serves as a tool for empowerment and unity.
